New York Fashion Week Style Takeaways

Sorry for my absence. January and the first half of February have been a whirlwind. But I’m back after a busy New York Fashion Week that always presents new ideas for getting dressed and I listed the top five below:

1. Consider minimal jewelry
I’m not a jewelry girl really. I wear silver hoops or bold earrings to spice up an outfit, but lately simple gold or silver jewelry is appealing to me. Steven Alan, who will debut a jewelry collection, was spot on with the styling at his fall 2014 presentation. The models wore subtle bracelets and chokers over chunky sweaters. Jayne Min’s collaboration with Jennifer Fisher and the Miansai screw cuff are other examples of clean, minimal jewelry that feels of the moment and modern.

2. Buy light wash denim
Although this is such a classic denim wash that’s typically associated with mom jeans, wearing it makes your outfit look infinitely cooler. It was on the runway a few times at Tibi and Michael Kors, and I also spotted women wearing it to the shows.

3. Elevate a sneaker with nice socks
I bought a pair of classic 574 New Balances last year and I have yet to wear them, but I spotted a girl wearing black New Balances with black dress socks and cropped trousers. That simple detail, a matching, non-athletic sock, made the sneaker look a tad more refined. Taylor Tomasi Hill also donned sneakers with the most amazing grey, ribbed socks.

4. Invest in a coat
I mean, this is always a takeaway, but do you know how many great coats designers showed this season? A lot. It seemed to be the key focus of their collections. On the street there were all types of obnoxious fur coats. The faux, colorful fur looks the coolest, although I spotted Sally Singer wearing the most elegant white fur coat that tied at the waist. The coat, whether fur or not, has to look insouciant though, otherwise it has an ostentatious effect that doesn’t read stylish.

5. Buy all black, suede Timberlands
Snow has been abundant this season and I haven’t committed to a pair of winter boots. During fashion week, the Sorel was the boot of choice. This brand hasn’t hit Ugg status yet, but because EVERYONE is wearing them, it’s the last thing I want to buy. I thought about purchasing the No. 6 boots, but now my mind is set. Thanks to Kate Foley, who wore a pair of black, suede Timberlands with a chunky sweater and soft, midi-length skirt, I’ve deduced that these will be my snow boot. And maybe my weekend and work boot. The tan Timberlands have been a thing, but all black, as shown above by Kanye, have a sleeker feel that’s more in line with what I wear.
