In A Style Rut? Do This.

The other day I was on Instagram and came across this image. The caption, “Dreaming about my 2015 look,” got my wheels turning. It made me ask myself, “How do I want to look in 2015?” Lately my uniform has been black high waisted trousers, a dark top, white slip-on Vans, these Elizabeth and James sunglasses, and a red lip. It’s easy and stylish, but I think it’s time for me to switch it up, and whenever I want to switch it up I do this:

I refer to the big stack of magazines in my bedroom and start tearing out pages with looks or items I like. I’ve done this for a while (digitally and on paper) and I it’s very helpful. Seeing what you like or how you want to look sparks ideas and gives you direction when shopping. But I imagine many women don’t have time for this process.
My time saving solution is to start a Pinterest account, or take a lo-fi approach and just arrange the magazine pages on your floor and take a picture with your phone (as seen above). And then make a bulleted list. Mine looks like this:
  • Buy red, sporty athletic trousers (I love this Michael Kors pre-fall look)
  • Instead of a down coat, consider an oversized shearling option
  • Buy culottes and/or cropped flared trousers
  • Consider orange
  • Keep buying menswear influenced stuff, it’s obvious you like it.
  • Think about statement sunglasses from Karen Walker and shoes from Reed Krakoff
  • When in doubt, TRY to do what Taylor Tomasi Hill, Solange Knowles, and Yasmin Sewell do.
My “board” doesn’t have a cohesive look or theme, but that’s fine. It gives me ideas for pieces I want, that I don’t have, and how informs how I should be spending my money while shopping. It’s a great exercise. Try it.In
