Building A Wardrobe

wardrobe-rack 2

Last week I heard Alexandre Mattiussi speak. He’s the designer behind Ami, a men’s brand that’s worth checking out. He approaches each collection by envisioning an ideal wardrobe for himself and his friends.

It made think about what would be in my ideal wardrobe. There’s tons of style books with chapters dedicated to the “10 pieces every woman should own,” but I’ve always found those lists trite and too general. As the weather finally starts to break, I thought it would be a good exercise to write down my ideal spring/summer wardrobe and see where I fare on the foundational items that give a wardrobe legs. Here goes:

Leather jacket: CHECK. I’m good on this. I purchased this All Saints moto jacket last year. Worth every penny.

Denim jacket: CHECK. I have a vintage Levi’s vintage jacket (see here) I bought in Miami that I wear often, but I wouldn’t mind something slightly oversized and boxy.

Trench: NEED. I currently own two vintage trench coats. One black and one tan. They have their use, but I’m not in love with either. I wouldn’t mind this one from Aritzia one or this J.W. Anderson one. Or, what about this short sleeved one by NSLT.

Cape: NEED/WANT. This isn’t a foundational piece, but this navy option from Ayr is very appealing.

Blazer: NEED. I have a black oversized blazer, but an ivory option would be a nice addition to my garment rack. Some matching trousers would be nice, too.

Denim shirt: NEED. I’ve been on the search for the perfect denim button-up for a while now that’s the perfect weight. It’s probably best to go vintage/thrift for this, but once I come across it, I’m sending it off to Bliss & Mischief for custom embroidery.

White shirt: NEED. I have a cropped white cotton top from Zara that I actually want to get tailored to make shorter, but I’ve been needing a white silk collared blouse for a while now. For me, you can never have too many white shirts.

Everyday shirt: I bought these Joe Fresh collared cardigans in navy, black, and grey for fall. I need a spring equivalent. I’m considering crew neck, short sleeve, light weight knits or cotton button-ups.

Black trouser/skirt: CHECK. I have cropped black trousers with a high waist, which is a staple for me, but I need something that’s lighter. I’m thinking linen. Or maybe a black cotton culotte. I’m trying to stay away from buying any more black skirts since I own many. Too many.

Jeans: NEED. NEED. NEED. My jean wardrobe is nowhere near where I would like it to be. I’m in search of the following: a white flare that I can wear with flats; the perfect Levi’s denim shorts with a high waist; denim culottes or trousers; and a boyfriend jean.

Dress: CHECK/NEED. Unless you can’t afford it, never put down a good dress that fits you. This season I’m in search of a black dress that’s suitable for warmer weather and a simple shirt dress that I can wear to work and on the weekends.

White sneaker: CHECK/NEED. I already have a pair of high top Converse sneakers and white slip on Vans, but I want something more substantial, like Air Force Ones.

Black sandal: CHECK/NEED. I have black gladiator sandals that get plenty of mileage during the warmer months, but I would like something with a mid-heel I can wear everywhere. Like these.

Neutral sandal: CHECK/NEED. I need a cognac colored sandal.

Statement shoe: It’s time for me to invest in a bold sandal. I’m considering something from Maryam Nasir or Loeffler Randall.

Handbag: NEED. I want this Clare Vivier bag in black.

Lipstick: A red lip has become my staple. I usually wear this stain from Sephora, which I love. I want something brighter with orange undertones.
